Partner Organization: The Gateways Project
Gateways’ focus is amplifying voices of people who are incarcerated through the use of tech tools. This organization is expanding their focus to address the history of racial injustice.

Project Description
Our project will contain three digital parts, including a website with audios recorded by our four team members and a digital story map embedded during spring quarter, and a short podcast series that will be recorded over the summer where we will be interviewing Santa Cruz locals such as historians and professors who have firsthand knowledge about a few of the six locations. In August, we will be hosting a launch event where we will introduce the importance of learning about the history of racial injustice, as well as how to use our three main tech tools to take an educational walking tour of the city’s six pinpointed locations. Our project can be useful for local schools and students to teach as part of their curriculum. 4th grade students are currently learning California history, and our research can be a good addition, especially as Santa Cruz schools are looking into weaving critical race studies into their school curriculum. It is also useful for Santa Cruz residents to learn more about their local history, so more work can be done in the future to improve the state of the racial issues currently going on
