Partner Organization: Voices of Women Media Technohub
Due to patriarchal and son-preference society, many young women in Nepal do not receive priority when it comes to education. Additionally, Nepal’s terrain and number of rural and remote towns creates even more difficulty for young women to physically go to school. Many families will also invest what money they have into their sons’ futures instead of their daughters’. Women’s rights and safety are also very important issues, resulting in further oppression. Voices of Women Media is a non-profit organization that is committed to offering access and opportunities to media technology and different forms of art, so that girls & women can voice their own lives – in order to raise hidden and silenced issues in our communities. We will be collaborating with VOWM and their TechnoHub program – which teaches high school aged Nepali girls computer and technology basics along with digital storytelling and activism.

Total Funding: $5,354.00

Project Description

The Everett x VOWM-TechnoHub team will be producing video tutorials on computer software basics, social media safety, digital art and graphic design in activism, and photography and camera basics. The video tutorials will also be followed by practical, yet creative activities to allow the students to gain hands on experience and practice with the topic covered. These video topics are based off of the TechnoHub curriculum and our conversation with the TH students on what they are interested in learning. This project has been going on since January 2021 and will wrap up around October 2021. The video tutorials will be able to be accessed through an extension on the VOWM website for future students and the public to see. Finalized videos (after being reviewed by the Everett team and VOWM and TechnoHub staffs) will be published summer of 2021. From here, the TechnoHub staff will be able to play these videos and conduct these activities for future classes in relation to the curriculum.

Project Outcomes

These video tutorials offer a long-term impact since they will be uploaded to the organizations official site and will be accessible for years to come. Additionally, the video tutorial topics hold relevancy and will still be practical in the future. Also, the activities that are assigned at the end of the video tutorials will produce work from the students, which will also be upload on the website with the videos. Here, past students, new students, and the public will be able to view these creations, reference them, and learn from them. The VOWM website is public, so the videos will be viewable by interested individuals who are not able to attend the program. We want to be able to deliver practical skills in a creative way that will help facilitate the inspiration of the students to create their own work that amplifies their voices. These young women are confident, passionate, and intelligent; we want them to keep harnessing those powerful aspects of themselves to tell their stories and create the change that they are nore than capable of.
